What’s so special about Phil Wood hubs? Why do they cost $400 when Shimano hubs are only $40?
When I visit my local bike shop, they seem to have both Shimano hubs and Phil Wood & Co. hubs for ten times the price of the Shimano. What’s so special about Phil Wood stuff? I’ve never really thought much about the hubs on my bike wheels; the ones the bike came with are always fine. So why spend so much? Do they really make that much of a difference?
PW hubs are a name that is synonymous with HIGH quality. Even the $40 hub by shimano can potentially last years and years if it is serviced and so can the Phill W hub. that isn’t saying that a PW hub wont go bad in a year or two…that can happen with nearly anything that is designed to wear out, even though it wont likely happen. PW hubs are made of a much Higher quality material with weight savings in mind and that along with about 25% going into the price for the name is why they cost that much. Would you do better with the PW over the Shimano ..? probably not and PW is just bike Porn when you get down to it. They are one of the best, probably better than XTR
