WHEELCHAIR SHOCK HELP? PLEASE? 10 POINTS!?
at school i always get shocked when i touch metal. so every period, when i go to my locker, i get shocked. and every time i touch my friends, we both get shocked. im in a electrical wheel chair so i think that has to do with it. i tried wearing gloves, but the shock went through. It has started happening last week from today (11-6-10). i asked my science teacher but he said it might be friction. im really tired of this and i hate getting hurt every period. please help me
Go to the electric Shop at your school and ask them to check the voltage between different metallic spots on your chair and a proper ground. Have them do that after you’ve been shocked (discharged the voltage). Then tool around in the chair for a little while and have them check the voltage again.
If there is a consistent voltage between your chair and a ground, something is wrong with the electrics in it.
I assume the chair runs on a 12volt or 24Volt DC battery. That’s really not enough voltage to shock you every time you touch something. It does sound like it might be Static Electricity, if so then tie a strap from something metal on the chair and let the other end drag on the ground. The strap should be wide & heavy enough so that it makes constant contact with the ground at all times. A piece of used steel belted radial tire should work, or you could try a strip of thin steel, copper, aluminum.
You might also try keeping dryer sheets in your pockets.
Basically you need to have the chair’s metal in contact with the ground at all times. I sure hope this helps, as an Electrical Engineer, I hate being shocked.
