Sixties furniture question: my parents called it a “poof”…?
In retrospect, it was the strangest piece of furniture I’ve ever seen, and we had this thing in our living room from time immemorial. It was about the height of a coffee table and had dimensions that might have suggested this would have been a use for it. However, it had three rolling casters underneath it, was black, round, about 2′ in diameter, and was upholstered in something like a fuzzy, shaggy carpeting. But it wasn’t a coffee table nor chair; it didn’t have a back, and it was kind of soft. It wasn’t the kind of thing you could really sit on, nor would you put anything on it. Except guests’ coats if you ran out of closet space…
… so does anybody know what the heck I’m talking about? What is this thing really called, and where would one go about getting one, not that I’d be all that interested in owning one, more of a curiosity from my childhood.
It could be used as an ottoman or footstool, or in a pinch someone could sit on it at a crowded cocktail party. My folks had one also.
Incidentally, my folks used the term “poof” too, just not referring to a piece of furniture. Those were different days and times.
