2000 Ford e-150 van:
The water leaks slowly out when driving; after about 10 miles a squealing noise starts. However, there is no squealing noise for the first 10 miles or so. The belt looks fine and seems to have proper tension. I recall (from previous automobiles) that water pumps squeal when they go bad. I am basically filling it with water every day and carrying water with me just in case. I (and of course keeping a careful I on the heat guage). Does this sound like the water pump?
Yes! If you can’t see where it is leaking out while your vehicle is idling, try having someone else rev it up a little while you look. It could be two problems; the water pump and a leak somewhere else, but I would say it is the water pump. The squealing would be the bearings behind the fan in the water pump, they have to warm up before they squeal. Usually a pretty easy fix if you don’t have to pull the radiator to get to the waterpump. Should be loosening the alternator and about 3 or 4 7/16 or 9/16 bolts on the water pump. Don’t forget to put something underneath to help catch the antifreeze from the radiator. Mel
