Does Shimano have a 40-hole rear hub?
I’m in a quandary of whether to go with Phil Wood or Shimano hubs. Phil Wood makes 40-hole hubs, but apparently Shimano doesn’t. My wife and I bike ~4000 miles a year on Shimano Parallax hubs with no problem, and they’re quiet. But, my rear 32-hole wheel has developed ~16 broken spokes over the last 18 months. I want something real sturdy for loaded bike touring because it is no fun having a broken rear spoke miles from nowhere.
That tandem hub has 145 mm axle spacing. My axle spacing is 135 mm. I’ve read that one can remove spacers on the left of the tandem hub to get it down to 135 mm; someone else said such removal only got it down to 141 mm. Who’s correct? Thanks.
Yes. They are called tandem hubs and are pretty much the holy grail for fully-loaded touring. They also make 48 hole hubs, which would make for a literally indestructible wheel.

Make sure the dropout spacing is correct.
